Well, this is all very peculiar ...

On the Wings of Dirty Angels is the debut album of one Charlie Terrell, a multi-talented fellow from the Southern USA, for whom there's a very detailed biography at - of all places - IMDb (Internet Movie Database). Otherwise, there's precious little else said about him anywhere on the Internet ... not even RYM, Discogs, or allmusic have anything posted beyond a list of albums he's released.

The only website where Terrell gets a mention at all is amazon.com, where this album has collected ten glowing 5-star reviews, whose authors seem as mystified as I am as to why Terrell is virtually unknown.

And - compounding the mystery - even though the band Terrell assembled to provide accompaniment for this album are all technically accomplished musicians, likewise none of their names pop up in any context outside of this album ... there's someone called Morad on bass; one Jim Phillips on lead guitar; Richard Smith aka 'Hawk' on percussion and harmonica; and a drummer named Doug Przybocki ... all otherwise unheard of.

I must admit, I didn't much care for the album initially, but On the Wings of Dirty Angels turned out to be a slow-burning grower. The reason I suspect, is that - beyond perhaps a few hints of The Allman Brothers and Red Hot Chili Peppers - the material is quite a weird fusion of styles that takes a while to assimilate ...

To start with, although Charlie Terrell's vocals are quite soulful, they're a bit rough around the edges, which is a bit at odds with soul vocals - the nearest comparison I can think of is he comes across a bit like a gruffer version of Willy DeVille of 1970's/1980's band Mink DeVille. But the backing is the trickiest part of the album's sound to nail down - it's a hybrid of funky Hard Rock with distinct blues colourings, yet the axe-work almost crosses over into metal at times.
